'Trapped in a Dreadful Dream': Relatives of Missing Teenagers Await News After Ski Resort Fire
The relatives of young people missing after a deadly blaze at a bar in a Swiss alpine town are enduring an painful wait for official news and requesting clues about their loved ones online.
The inferno devastated the Le Constellation bar in the alpine resort, located in the Swiss Alps of the Valais region, in the middle of the night of January 1st. Verified footage reveal the roof structure catching alight as bottles with sparklers are raised in celebration.
Emergency services have indicated that it could take days if not weeks to formally name the victims of the tragedy, which claimed the lives of numerous partygoers and wounded another over a hundred. Officials stated on Friday that 113 of the injured have been accounted for, with work still underway to locate the final individuals.
In the interim, relatives have been taking to social media to request any news about their missing relatives who were at the bar that night.
Heartbreaking Pleas for the Unaccounted For
The whereabouts of Swiss national Arthur Brodard, sixteen, are still unconfirmed, according to an appeal from his mother.
The resident of a town near the city, informed a publication that she had returned to Lausanne to check whether he was in the medical facility, while his other parent did the equivalent search in Bern, but was unsuccessful.
"This is a living nightmare, a nightmare. The options are finding my son in the morgue, or I find him in critical condition. It's horrific," she told the paper.
She added that some of his friends had been located with burns covering a significant portion of their bodies. "It's unspeakable; they endured an absolute nightmare."
The Italy's foreign ministry has confirmed that six of its nationals are still unaccounted for.
Included in that group is Emanuele Galeppini, a teenage sportsman, originally from Italy but now living in the UAE.
The Italian Golf Federation has released a tribute that he is deceased, without mentioning the fire, honoring a "talented young man who represented passion and true sportsmanship."
His parent, reportedly stated that his son was at the bar and was last in contact around midnight. An official spokesperson has clarified that a formal confirmation of his death is awaited.
Additional Missing Individuals
Giovanni Tamburi, sixteen, is likewise unaccounted for. His parent explained that he had been on holiday but had ventured out with friends and found himself at the bar.
"A close friend informed me they fled after the fire started and that he had his mobile with him, but then at a specific moment he lost sight of him," she recounted, adding he had been wearing a identifiable piece of jewelry.
