Thomas Tuchel Wants Bellingham's Aggression So Long As The Three Lions' Ace Leaves Egotism at the Door.

One snub was enough. Another and it would have started to look vindictive from Thomas Tuchel, a coach who is far too wily not to understand that securing World Cup glory demands the involvement of Jude Bellingham, even if it is equally Bellingham's responsibility to adapt to the strategic frameworks and team pecking order necessary with the national team now that he is back in the manager's warm embrace.

The manager seeks his aggressive mentality, his intensity, but it is about channeling it in the right way. Skill matters but the squad know from bitter experience that there is a cost when stardom dominates. Still, a point has been made.

Bellingham had plenty to reflect on after being left out of the recent team selection. He observed the national side book their place at the upcoming World Cup without him. He watched the young talent perform brilliantly as a counterpressing attacking midfielder. He heard Tuchel mention loving the team's dynamism and ethics. Inevitably, Bellingham has responded in winning fashion, finding the back of the net for Real Madrid versus Barcelona and Juventus. He had to be picked; another omission would have made his squad place hanging by a thread.

The hope is that the manager will have a Bellingham directed towards frightening rivals instead of his own colleagues. After all, from a tactical perspective, there is little benefit to creating tension with an elite performer in the world. The ideal scenario is that Bellingham’s time not playing has demonstrated that playing for one's country is a precious, precarious thing. Tuchel, on his side, can now provide cover around the 22-year-old after proving that he is not afraid to drop big names.

“There is no problem with him, and no concern with the character,” Tuchel said. “Bellingham just has the edge. You need that kind of fire to achieve greatness that he reached. We all must help him and create an environment which he can channel this edge in matches and towards the goals we are striving for as a team.”

Bellingham took up much of the focus at Tuchel’s squad announcement for the upcoming meaningless matches versus Serbia and Albania. Who else? Well, what about another talent? Here is another prodigious No 10 who needs coaching. He has been absent for the national team since spring and has found it hard to perform well recently but Tuchel could not ignore the player after how he played in his club's victory versus the German side this week.

The question, though, is how to use the various creators at England’s disposal. Morgan Rogers and Eze merit inclusion and there will be a good argument to include Cole Palmer once he overcomes a persistent groin problem. Would taking several attacking midfielders to the World Cup be too many? Gareth Southgate never found the right blend at the European Championship. He made concessions by forcing both stars into the team, restricting the captain's influence in the process.

It is hard to see the current manager repeating that if it hurts the attacking balance. Space exists for one No 10, with quick attackers on the flanks. Clarity is beneficial. Bellingham is in as a No 10. Bournemouth’s Alex Scott, selected for the first time, is a central midfielder and the returning Wharton will battle another player as a defensive midfielder. There will also be no wide role for Foden, who has to be central. The coach prefers him near the striker. “It is illogical to ask Phil: ‘You are needed on the pitch but no spot exists in your preferred role, could you fill in at the left side? Or the right wing?” he stated. “He is to feature in the central attacking zone, through the center. I've long had this fantasy about him for years. I think it fits his style the most.”

Tuchel conceded there are times when the player has not looked himself in an national jersey. “One senses as if, ‘Does he really enjoy it? And someone of his caliber who has this childish joy for the game, then clearly an issue exists, be it his role, the environment, I don’t know.

“In my opinion he is additionally so used to playing for Man City in a specific system, with a defined role. I think he benefits a lot from clear instructions. Where do you want me to be? Where exactly should I turn? Where am I supposed to push the tempo? Where do I have to defend?

Tuchel discussed one star making runs for easy finishes and Foden netting strikes from 18 yards. He said he has a longlist of 60 players. Several players, Myles Lewis-Skelly, James Trafford and the midfielder have been omitted. A new face is rewarded for his excellent performances for Manchester City at left-back. Interest is high.

Leaving out of Ollie Watkins means there is no like-for-like alternative for the captain in the selection. Fascinatingly, Tuchel suggested deploying the playmaker as a false 9 against one opponent or Albania. Anthony Gordon, the United forward, the midfielder and the winger are other options should Kane be unavailable. With qualification secured, this is a moment for trying new things.

Meanwhile, it is also a chance to develop the understanding with Bellingham going. It is remarkable that you have to go back to Bellingham setting up the captain to net in an international match versus the Scots in September 2023 to discover the sole instance in 35 games for the national team when the pair linked up for a goal. Tuchel will know that the two stars only passed to each other a single time during the team's ties with one opponent and Slovenia at the European Championship. The connection is lacking.

“At this point eventually it becomes the duty of the players,” Tuchel said. He does not shy away to deliver home truths. There is still a feeling of the player being on trial. He cannot even be guaranteed to begin versus Serbia and Albania. Tuchel desires him committed but he will be watching him carefully. Set aside the ego at the door. Doing so could turn a very strong squad into an more effective one.
