The Canadian Team Cleared of American Claims of Rigging Bobsleigh Qualifying Race

The Canadian skeleton team were cleared of accusations that they rigged a qualifying event for the upcoming Games, thereby denying rival athletes a chance to qualify.

Central Claim and Official Inquiry

US skeleton veteran Katie Uhlaender accused the team from Canada of withdrawing four of its six entered athletes from a race in Lake Placid. She claimed this shrunk the competition, making fewer qualifying points available. Despite winning the event, Uhlaender failed to earn her berth for the Milan-Cortina Games.

“Existing federation regulations permit National Federations to pull competitors from an event at any time,” stated the International Bobsleigh & Skeleton Federation (IBSF).

After reviewing the matter, the IBSF stated it would take no action, dismissing the complaints as there was no breach of its regulations.

Defense and Rationale

Reacting to the claims, Bobsleigh Canada Skeleton defended the decision, citing competitor health and the need for rest. They asserted that the individuals pulled had already raced multiple times that week and the decision was “appropriate, transparent and aligned with both their well-being and the integrity of the sport.”

Representatives of the US, Denmark, Israel, and Malta had voiced “serious concerns” about the qualification process.

Uhlaender's Olympic Quest

For Katie Uhlaender, the 2026 Olympics are planned to be her last Olympic appearance. Her path to qualification remains, the likely American berths are projected for other athletes. She is a former world champion whose closest Olympic finish was just off the podium in 2014.

Broader Context

This incident comes during a time of increased rivalry in sports between Canada and the US. Recent political rhetoric and trade disputes have fueled a spirited competitive atmosphere. Recent memorable clashes include heated ice hockey matches and a seven-game baseball championship featuring clubs in the neighboring nations.
