No less than 64 individuals were killed in a security raid cracking down on the organized crime group in Rio de Janeiro's north zone - the biggest and most lethal operation in the area's past.

Four security agents lost their lives during the security mission in the communities of Alemão and Penha, government representatives said. More than 80 suspects were detained.

Violent conflicts commenced when around 2,500 police forces moved in on the morning of the operation. The criminal organization countered with shooting, burning barricades and launching explosives via unmanned aircraft, authorities stated.

The United Nations human rights body stated it felt "shocked" by the law enforcement raid, urging "swift and comprehensive examinations".

Mission Consequences

The slum neighborhoods close to the city's international airport is considered to be the headquarters of a major illegal networks.

State officials stated at least 50 of the fatalities were "indicated by police as suspected of being criminals".

Dozens of people were wounded, including non-combatants affected by the violence.

Local Reaction

Locals have likened the elevated neighborhood - inhabited by approximately 300,000 individuals - to a "battlefield" since the raid started.

Access ways continue shut throughout the region.

Organized Crime Spread

The Comando Vermelho organization have been expanding their influence in the area, growing illegal substance trade paths and power in the informal settlements.

Rio's police stated in excess of 200kg (441lb) of drugs were seized in the raid, along with dozens of firearms.

The joint operation by different law enforcement agencies follows a twelve-month inquiry.

Numerous alleged criminals are thought to be members of a faction from the Pará state who are at the moment taking refuge in the metropolitan area.
